IBB reception draws members of Congress, aides

Labor allies, officials also attend

SOME TWO DOZEN members of Congress attended the Boilermakers’ legislative reception at the Capitol Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., May 16. Labor allies from the AFL-CIO, including President Rich Trumka, along with representatives from international unions and government officials such as NLRB member Philip Miscimarra, also joined the event.

Conn. congressman receives second legislator of year award

WHEN IT COMES to lawmakers who reliably fight for labor causes — especially IBB causes — Joe Courtney’s name frequently appears at the top of the list. The U.S. representative from Connecticut’s 2nd congressional district received his second Abe Breehey Legislator of the Year Award May 17 during the Boilermakers’ annual LEAP conference in Washington, D.C. He received his first award in 2007 during his first term in Congress.

LEAP conference targets fast track, TPP

Passions rise against yet another free trade deal

THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION’S push for fast track trade authority and new trade deals dominated the Boilermakers’ 2015 LEAP conference discussion May 18-19 in Washington, D.C., as speakers slammed the efforts, calling them disastrous for American jobs.

In his opening remarks, International President Newton B. Jones outlined those issues and others that are important to our union.

Local 627 members protest TPP

LEAP 2015 Tentative Issues

MANY ISSUES WILL come before Congress between now and the LEAP Conference in mid-May. Republicans now control both the House and Senate, and this should make for an interesting legislative session! However, we don’t have a firm idea yet about what issues may be on the main Republican agenda and whether Congress will work with the administration. Much will depend on what moves forward in the next month or two. While there are many issues on which we could lobby, we do try to limit them to about four major topics for our visits to the Hill.

College dream turns into financial nightmare for Lisa Suda

Daughter of L-7 member speaks out about high cost of higher education

IT WAS SUPPOSED to be a dream come true for Lisa Suda, daughter of Local 7 (Buffalo, N.Y.) member Douglas Suda. Lisa was accepted into American University in Washington, D.C., in 2007, a private college ranked in the top 100 nationally. Four years later, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science/American Government with a minor in American Studies.

She was ready to start a promising new career as a congressional staff assistant.
