Local 105 earns highest safety honor

National Safety Award renamed to honor former NACBE Executive Director

THE GREAT LAKES Section took top honors for the first time ever, when Local 105 (Piketon, Ohio) was named winner of the National Safety Award — now known as the John F. Erickson NACBE Award — during the Construction Sector Operations conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, March 4-8.

Boilermakers sponsor 40 Native American elders

Each spring and fall Adopt-A-Native-Elder delivers boxes of food, clothing and simple medicines to many different areas of the Navajo reservation.

Donations help elderly Navajo maintain traditional lifestyles

FORTY NAVAJO ELDERS living in remote tribal areas in the Southwest are now receiving food packages, food certificates and firewood courtesy of the Boilermakers union as part of an outreach program based in Salt Lake City, Utah.

International President Newton B. Jones said a decision was made last year to support the program, Adopt-A-Native-Elder, as a substantial number of our members who live in Arizona and New Mexico are part of the Navajo Nation.

Boilermakers win six ILCA awards

International Labor Communications Association

Group cites IBB for publishing, video, photography, website

THE INTERNATIONAL LABOR Communications Association has announced that creative work produced by the Boilermakers International has been selected for six awards of excellence.

The Communications Department received a first place award for Best Design/Newspapers and Newsletters; three second place awards for General Excellence/Website, Best Front Page/Cover, and Writing Awards/Best Profile; and a third place award for Best Photograph.

Honor recognizes Helmets to Hardhats initiative

INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT Joe Maloney has been presented Canada's Meritorious Service Cross for his work in founding the Helmets to Hardhats (H2H) program, which helps Canadian Armed Forces veterans find careers in the building trades when they leave the service. Governor General of Canada Julie Payette presented the decoration during ceremonies in Ottawa, Ontario, Dec. 12.

Boilermaker-built USS Little Rock meets namesake in Buffalo

WHEN THE USS Little Rock littoral combat ship number 9 (LCS 9) was commissioned December 16, 2017, in Buffalo, New York, retired Local 7 member and former BNAP National Coordinator Marty Spencer was on hand to witness the historic event. It was historic because it marked the first time in the U.S. Navy's 242-year history that a new warship was commissioned alongside its namesake.

Retired IVP-NE Michael Murphy passes

RETIRED NORTHEAST SECTION International Vice President Michael S. Murphy passed away Nov. 27. He was 71. He retired Sept. 1, 2004 after 36 years as a Boilermaker member. Murphy was the father of former IVP-NE Sean Murphy.

The Army National Guard helped those stranded in flood waters caused by Hurricane Harvey, which made an August landfall in Texas.

IBB Disaster fund helps members recover

A STRING OF natural disasters hit North America in 2017, causing destruction across the U.S. and Canada. Boilermakers in several regions were impacted by fires, hurricanes and flooding.

Boilermakers - Changing with the Times

The boilermakers union has been in Canada for more than 100 years.

They have, and continue to primarily produce steel fabrications, working on projects ranging from bridges to blast furnaces to construction of mining equipment.  The job remains physically demanding, requiring a mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity while performing precise work to exacting standards – often in extreme weather conditions.

The job hasn’t really changed.
