Boilermakers find inspiration and solidarity at national tradeswomen conference

Event draws over 1,600 from US, Canada

FROM APPRENTICES TO journeymen, 36 female Boilermakers joined over 1,600 tradeswomen at the 2017 Women Build Nations conference in Chicago October 13-15 to learn about the special challenges and opportunities facing women in the construction industry. This year’s conference, sponsored by North America’s Building Trades Unions and the Chicago Women in Trades, brought together women from all crafts and regions for networking and support.

Local 4 receives Charles W. Jones Award

THE CHARLES W. Jones Award, which honors the local lodge demonstrating the highest use of specified MOST programs during the preceding year, went to Local Lodge 4 of Page, Arizona. International President Newton B. Jones presented the award to Local 4 Business Manager/Secretary-Treasurer Louis Dodson, Jr. Local 4 is the seventh lodge to receive the award since its inaugural presentation to Local 154 (Pittsburg), in 2011.

DNCL member reflects on 50 years with Linwood Mining

Richard “Pete” Petersen recently retired after 50-years at Linwood Mining & Materials Corp. near Davenport, Iowa.

Pete Petersen started career at 17

WHEN RICHARD “PETE” Petersen, a 50-year member of the National Cement Lodge (DNCL), started working in 1967 at Linwood Mining & Minerals Corp. near Davenport, Iowa, he was a 17-year-old high school student. He worked 40 hours a week on Linwood’s second shift while finishing his senior year of high school during the day. When he wasn’t working, studying or sleeping, he also found time to work on area farms, cleaning barns and planting crops.

THE 2017 INDUSTRIAL Sector Operations Conference drew 172 delegates from across North America to the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas July 31-Aug. 4. The meeting provided opportunities to learn from plenary speakers and breakout presenters, and to network with other lodge leaders.

Boilermakers set another fundraising record

THE 9TH ANNUAL Union Sportsmen’s Alliance/Boilermakers Clay Shoot held in Lenexa, Kansas, September 23 raised more than $184,000, setting an all-time high for USA shooting events and topping the previous record of $160,000 set by the Boilermakers in 2016. The event took place at the Powder Creek Shooting Park.

“As always, the Boilermakers have set the bar high” for USA shoots, said Scott Vance, the USA’s CEO and Executive Director, in ceremonies concluding the day.

Attention Members in Need of Disaster Relief

IN THE WAKE of hurricanes Harvey and Irma, some Boilermakers and their families have suffered significant and possibly devastating losses to their homes and personal property.

The Boilermakers have processed disaster relief checks for 25 members and retirees from Local 74 (Beaumont, Texas), Local 132 (Galveston, Texas) and the Quality Control Council of the United States.

The International has issued an appeal to local lodges to assist fellow members impacted by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.

All locals and members are urged to donate to our Disaster Relief Fund in support of the victims of these natural disasters, and to assist our brothers and sisters during this critical time of need.
