Measure benefitting Boilermaker work passes Washington State House & Senate

Western States M.O.R.E. Work Investment Fund Organizers Mircha Vorobets, Erik Seaberg and Trent Sorensen with IR Mark Keffeler, BM-ST Tracey Eixenberger and members of L-502 in front of the Washington State Capital successfully lobbied to get HB 1817 passed. The measure awaits Washington State Governor Jay Inslee to sign it into law.

Important news out of Washington State for Boilermakers: Proposed legislation has passed both the State House and Senate that requires 60 percent of craftsmen and women working in Washington State refineries to be apprentices of state approved programs—including the Boilermakers apprenticeship program.

The measure, which was powered by Boilermakers Western States M.O.R.E. Work Investment Fund through a joint effort with the Washington State Building Trades, now awaits the signature of Washington State Governor Jay Inslee.

Bank of Labor film receives International recognition

Newton B. Jones, Bank of Labor Chairman and CEO and Boilermakers International President, accepts the award from Società Cattolica di Assicurazione – Società Cooperativa President Paolo Bedoni.

A DOCUMENTARY FILM produced by Bank of Labor called “Lobstermen” received a special award from Società Cattolica di Assicurazione – Società Cooperativa in Verona, Italy, this past November during the organization’s annual film festival highlighting the Catholic Church’s social doctrine.

IBB sits down with UK trade union and Global CCS Institute

ONE OF THE UNITED KINGDOM’S largest unions — the Global, Municipal, Boilermaker and Allied Trade Union (GMB) —- and the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute (GCCSI) met with Boilermaker leadership in January to discuss the important role carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) plays in mitigating global climate change.

Local 11 clinches NACBE’s top safety honor

Section awards go to three locals

WESTERN STATES LOCAL 11 (Helena, Montana) earned The John F. Erickson NACBE Safety Award presented during the Construction Sector Operations conference in Marco Island, Florida, March 4-7.

L-11 Business Manager/Secretary Treasurer Clinton Penny accepted the national honor, which reflects the local’s 2018 stats: zero OSHA recordable injuries, 441,690 total man-hours worked, and the highest number of man-hour percentage by contractors who contribute to the safety index (72 percent or 318,283 man-hours).

AFTER NEARLY FIVE years as International Vice President of Canada, in addition to nine years as IVP of Western Canada, Joe Maloney retired Feb. 1 from a distinguished career in the Boilermakers. The International Executive Committee, by unanimous vote, elected Arnie Stadnick, Director of Canadian Industrial Sector Operation Lodge Services and Assistant Director – ISO, as Maloney’s replacement.

LOCAL LODGE 26 (Savannah, Georgia) was presented with the Charles W. Jones Award, during the 2018 MOST National Tripartite Alliance Conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, this past August. The award honors the local lodge demonstrating the highest use of specified MOST programs during the preceding year. International President Newton B.
