IndustriALL Global Union affiliate, the Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ), is opposing plans by Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), to outsource operations, and transfer over 1,000 workers to contractors. 

International trade regulations and disputes should always prioritize the preservation, protection and generation of jobs in all countries.

Today, in a joint event, Inditex and IndustriALL Global Union, which represents 50 million workers in 140 countries, celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Global Framework Agreement, signed to protect and promote labour conditions throughout Inditex’s entire supply chain. 

The GFA is a first for an e-commerce brand, and will establish a framework for protecting and strengthening the rights of workers producing ASOS own-brand products in countries around the world.

The National Monitoring Committee (NMC) system is the implementation arm of the Global Framework Agreement (GFA) between H&M and IndustriALL. The Committees are set up in five countries and met on 1-2 October in Bangkok, Thailand.

Thousands of workers took to the streets and marched in 13 towns across South Africa in support of a national strike against state capture and corruption on 27 September. The strike, which was a protected strike in terms of the law, was called by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU). IndustriALL affiliates the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union, National Union of Mineworkers, and the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers Union took part in the strike.

IndustriALL Global Union affiliates have been taking an active role in helping to push through new laws improving women’s rights in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. 

Young workers from 11 IndustriALL affiliates representing the construction, chemical, garment and textile, energy, metal and mining sectors in Southern Africa, from Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland met in Gaborone, Botswana, from 20-21 September, to discuss how they can network and develop joint actions on common struggles. The workshop explored ways to increase the participation of the youth in unions.

IndustriALL affiliates in Mexico, together with other partners, are helping to remove rubble, free survivors, restore basic services, provide accommodation, food and moral support and carry out other work that is needed to facilitate the search for victims, days after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Mexico. 

Indian automotive unions met in Chennai on 21 – 23 September to discuss social dialogue, precarious work, building union network and improving health and safety.

More than 40 trade union delegates from all regions where SKF operates met from 18 to 21 September 2017 in Gothenburg, Sweden, the home city and the headquarters of the global leader in bearings solutions including bearings, dealings and components. The World Union Committee now represents SKF employees from twenty countries.

The Global Labour University – a partnership between the ILO, prominent universities in five countries, national and global trade unions and foundations  – is offering a free online course designed to develop the bargain strategies of trade union activists.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has called for a national strike on 27 September to protest “state capture”, corruption and retrenchments.
