Cement lodge leaders discuss bargaining and steward training

CEMENT DISTRICT LODGE D11, encompassing 13 affiliated lodges in Western Canada, held its annual conference for lodge leaders July 10-13 in Sun Peaks, British Columbia. The conference offered local leaders the opportunity to learn more about their role in the union and to network with other leaders within the district. Educational sessions included information on drug and alcohol testing, group insurance, basic steward training and benefit bargaining.

BC Boilermakers meet with province party head

Boilermakers from various British Columbia lodges meet with the provincial leader of the NDP March 12. BOILERMAKER LEADERS FROM five local lodges in British Columbia met with John Horgan, the new Leader of the New Democratic Party in the BC province, March 12, near Vancouver. They were joined by International Rep Richard MacIntosh. The meeting gave members an opportunity to discuss issues that affect Boilermakers and the industries in which they work. Among the topics were jobs, developments in the cement industry, the offshore construction of ferry boats, the carbon tax on industry, and a planned hydroelectric project.

Steelworkers cite IBB solidarity for ending strike

District Lodge D11 members refuse to unload barges

BOILERMAKER CEMENT LODGES in western Canada are credited with helping to end a strike and lockout between Lafarge and United Steelworkers (USW) Local 816 in early May.

IBB Local D385 (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Local D277 (Bamberton, British Columbia) refused to unload barges carrying lime from quarries operated by the Steelworkers following a strike and subsequent lockout. The labor dispute ran from April 27 to May 6.

New lodge officers attend training

Program held in five cities in United States and Canada

2008 WAS AN election year — not only for the governments of Canada and the United States, but also for Boilermaker local lodges in both countries. While U.S. lodges must hold elections every three years, Canadian lodges do so every five years. Occasionally, the Boilermaker local lodge election cycles coincide, as they did in 2008.

National Transient Lodge

Effective Aug. 11, 2007 to July 10, 2008, for 32 members of the National Transient Lodge who manufacture tanks and tank systems for the grain processing industry at the Winbco Tank Company in Ottumwa, Iowa. Winbco is a custom manufacturer of tanks, pressure vessels, columns, and equipment for use in the food, grain, ethanol, hydrocarbon, chemical, power, wastewater, fruit juice, and brewing industries.
