Thirty-three Boilermakers attended the 65th Boilermakers Summer Institute basic and advanced sessions in Madison, Wisconsin. The program, which is presented through the University of Wisconsin, provides new and aspiring union leaders with information and skills to strengthen their representation of members. Sessions are led by School for Workers professors, as well as International staff.
The basic session, which took place July 7-12, covered the Brotherhood structure and services, introduction to the National Labor Relations Act, labor and globalization, arbitration cases, stewards and representation, grievance writing, safety and health, introduction to collective bargaining, public relations for negotiations, building strength through diversity, building membership involvement, the Family and Medical Leave Act, and the basics of internal and external organizing.
The advanced session was held August 11-16 and covered effective leadership styles, advanced labor law for bargaining, grievance handling, strategic power analysis, strategic use of unfair labor practices, labor and economic inequality, communication skills, grievance scenarios, political affairs, advanced collective bargaining skills, and labor and the global economy.
