Local lodge leaders attend summer institute

Basic Class

THIRTY-FOUR BOILERMAKERS from the United States and Canada attended the 61st annual School for Workers Summer Institute in Madison, Wisconsin, August 13-24. Over the two-week period, the institute offered basic and advanced courses. Participants received training from School for Workers professors as well as International staff on topics geared to broaden understanding of the labor movement and skills that are essential to union leadership development.

International announces scholarship winners for 2018

Twenty-eight graduating seniors receive combined $56,000

THE BOILERMAKERS’ INTERNATIONAL Executive Council scholarship committee has announced the winners of its 2018 scholarship program. The committee awarded $56,000 to 28 recipients, with $38,000 going to U.S. applicants and $18,000 going to Canadian applicants. The one-year grants included one $5,000 award, 11 $3,000 awards, two $2,000 awards and 14 $1,000 awards.

National Cement Lodge

Effective Aug. 29, 2008 to Aug. 28, 2011, for eight members of the National Cement Lodge who make perlite (a form of natural glass) at Chemrock Corp. in Bala Cynwyd, Pa.

L-104 — Seattle

Effective March 31, 2008 to March 31, 2011, for 10 members of Local 104 (Seattle), who make forestry equipment and parts at Acrowood Corporation.

Local 614 members build sub in record time

THANKS TO THE efforts of Local 614 members (Groton, Conn.) the U.S. Navy christened its newest Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine, the New Hampshire, on June 21, a date that coincided with the 220th anniversary of New Hampshire’s statehood.

The fifth Virginia class to be built, she was completed months ahead of schedule at General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Conn.
