The St. Paul Regional Labor Federation, led by President Kera Peterson (IAM), held a job and resource fair to connect displaced workers with good union jobs in industries like construction, manufacturing, public schools, health care, hospitality, retail and public services. In addition to connecting job seekers with union jobs, the labor council has held information sessions on local and national union history and the advantages of union membership.

Service + Solidarity Spotlight: SAG-AFTRA Keeps Members Educated About Safe Reopening
Working people across the United States have stepped up to help out our friends, neighbors and communities during these trying times. In our regular Service + Solidarity Spotlight series, we’ll showcase one of these stories every day. Here’s today’s story.
SAG-AFTRA hosted a livestream event this month on the return to work in the entertainment industry. The presentation comes when productions around the country either are preparing to reopen or already have done so. In her opening remarks, President Gabrielle Carteris said, “It’s really important that [members] are empowered and understand what’s taking place so you can decide if you feel safe enough to go back to work.” The event highlighted the work SAG-AFTRA has done with their employers and other unions to ensure workers in the entertainment sector can return to work as safely as possible.

NATCA Members Deliver Thanks to Hospital Staff Who Saved One of Their Own from COVID-19: "When Chelsea Corcoran, a member of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) in Houston, Texas, fell severely ill with COVID-19, the staff at Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital did everything they could to save her life and the lives of the twins she was carrying."
South Carolina’s Labor Movement Comes Together to Provide Food Relief to Families in Need: "Members of the Charleston Central Labor Council, the South Carolina AFL-CIO, the Greater Charleston chapter of the A. Philip Randolph Institute and their community allies teamed up last Thursday to provide food relief for some dozens of union families in the Charleston, South Carolina, area."
Washington State Labor Council Launches First-of-Its-Kind Naturalization Legal Aid Program: "The Washington State Labor Council (WSLC) is launching a program to offer legal aid to permanent residents seeking naturalization. Economy Gains 1.8 Million Jobs in June; Unemployment Declines to 10.2%: "The U.S. economy gained 1.8 million jobs in July, and the unemployment rate declined to 10.2%, according to figures released Friday morning by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The improvements reflect the continued resumption of economic activity that previously was curtailed because of the COVID-19 pandemic."
Activision Blizzard Game Workers Take Collective Action to Reduce Pay Inequities: "Employees of video game publisher Activision Blizzard Inc. are comparing their salaries after an internal company survey revealed that more than half of the company’s workers were unhappy with their pay. Activision Blizzard had promised pay increases after conducting a pay equity study, but many game workers have expressed frustration about the raises provided."

Last week, members of the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA) participated in an “Ask Ernie” online town hall with President Ernest Logan. The event focused on sharing strategies on the issue of reopening schools. Logan said that safety and the mental health needs of students must be the highest priorities. “This is an opportunity for us to really talk about how we transform and be transformative, and what education looks like in the future,” he explained. “We need to talk about what it is that we need to do for our children, so that we’re able to allow them to be productive citizens going forward that can take part in the real cultural and civic life they should have.”

The Milwaukee Area Labor Council, led by President Pam Fendt (LIUNA), held a “Be a Hero” food drive yesterday. For the past week, union members have been pledging to donate food to support families in need. For each donation pledge, the Milwaukee Area Labor Council tweeted at U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, letting him know working people in Wisconsin were standing up for each other, since he took a vacation instead of standing up for families and passing the HEROES Act. Yesterday, all of the union members who made a pledge stopped by the Milwaukee Area Labor Council parking lot to donate their food and to support families in need.

From the Front Lines: Britney's Story
“It’s always the right time to do the right thing.” My union leader, William Voltz, always says that Martin Luther King Jr. quote.
My name is Britney Andrews. I am a union shop steward with UNITE HERE Local 23 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Before the coronavirus forced me out of work, I had been a bartender at Phillips Famous Seafood at the Charlotte airport for three years.
On Aug. 11, 2020, my union, ally organizations and I helped organize a food drive in front of Senator Thom Tillis’ office in Charlotte as part of the nationwide action to call on senators to extend the $600 for unemployment insurance. Also, I was one of the 6,000 people fasting that day as part of the Virtual #FastAction. While that day was a long and rough one, it was transformative. I am inspired that over 6,000 fasters participated in the virtual event. The whole action really made me think about what my own neighbors may be going through that I don’t know about. It opened my eyes to a bigger picture. If I could do that action every week, I would. I felt like I was making a difference, even though I’m just one person.
We gave out food and gift cards in front of Tillis’ office to demonstrate the need that is in the community. And to remind Tillis that “It’s always the right time to do the right thing.”
The people we gave food to said “thank you” and “it’s greatly appreciated.” In fact, at one point a public transit bus that came by, the driver asked what we were doing, and a passenger took a bag of food. The need in Charlotte and the rest of the U.S. is real. The news doesn’t show us the real problems in the world.
Fasting while giving food to others was transformative. It made me think about what my own neighbor might be going through that I don’t know about. I think it is fantastic that 6,000 people joined the fast on such short notice.
I’ve fasted for doctor’s appointments before, but hadn’t had to do it for a whole day. Just fasting for a 24-hour period, I felt like my own stomach was eating itself. It was a horrible feeling. I can’t imagine how children, or any other human being, go without food for one day, much less multiple days. You just never know what someone is going through until you’ve gone through it. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have my own child sitting there and not be able to feed him. I would feel like less of a parent.
My children didn’t quite understand that I was fasting. I have two 5-year-olds, a 12-year-old and a 14-year-old. My husband and my mom were really supportive about the fast and the action. In fact, my mom is one of those people who will purchase more than she needs, so she can give the extra to people who are in need. Before the pandemic and being furloughed from the airport, I was able to donate school supplies for kids who may not have been able to get them. Now the shoe is on the other foot and I’m the parent struggling just to make sure that I can get everything on the school supplies list.
HMS Host, the company I work for, has notified me and my co-workers that we will be permanently laid off if we are not recalled back to work by October 15. This means I would lose my seniority and recall rights. My health insurance has already been cut off for months now. If feels like HMS Host is only interested in what their workers can do for them now, and that if you can’t do anything for them now, they’re not going to take care of you.
It's not my fault that this happened. It’s not the government’s fault that this happened, but this is why we have a government to take care of the American people when unforeseeable things do happen.
The community needs to come together. I’m talking about the union. I’m talking about my neighbors, your neighbors, that aren't in unions. I’m talking about EVERYONE! Everyone speaking up together so that our voices can be heard. Why does it have to be about politics? The United States starts with UNITED; we need to come together and stand for what’s right! It shouldn’t be about the money and dividing people.
Thank you to all the people who participated in the fast, all those people who have been calling in to their senators, and all those taking action. I wish Senator Tillis would have a conversation with one of us. He would get a feel for what one individual person, along with thousands of others, are going through in his state and what obstacles they’ve faced that they haven’t been able to overcome. But he hasn’t answered our calls, emails or questions. None of our questions or pleas have been answered, much less resolved. While this current moment is hard, and more trying times will come, I am glad to be part of our union and to have so many people taking action with me. I don’t think I would have the perspective I do now if I hadn’t met William and joined the union. I’m not giving up on keeping my job and I’m not giving up on this fight. I just want the senators to know, “It’s always the right time to do the right thing.”

A wind storm that hit the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, area last week with hurricane-force winds has left tens of thousands of people without shelter and electricity. Tent cities have popped up in neighborhoods due to widespread damage to the roofs of homes and apartment complexes. The Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO and the Hawkeye Area Labor Council brought together a strong contingent of union members on Saturday to help clear rubble and downed trees, deliver food and water, and perform welfare checks on elder residents in the community. State federation President Charlie Wishman (AFT) and Secretary-Treasurer Peter Hird (IBEW) helped lead Saturday’s event, which was sponsored by a number of elected officials who are former or current union members. The Hawkeye Area Labor Council, the Iowa Federation of Labor, the United Way and Teamsters (IBT) Local 238 are collaborating on a disaster relief effort in the greater Cedar Rapids area, collecting donations of food, water, toiletries, baby supplies, and batteries and flashlights.

On Aug. 7, Wisconsin State AFL-CIO President Stephanie Bloomingdale (AFT) sent a letter of solidarity and support to 150 workers at the Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM) who are seeking union representation with Machinists (IAM) Local Lodge 66. “By raising your voices together for dignity and respect, you help guarantee that the Milwaukee Art Museum lives up to its prestigious reputation. Strong unions and good collective bargaining agreements lift up all workers, creating a vibrant economy and recovery for all,” she wrote. “I wish you strength and solidarity in the ongoing efforts to create a workplace where your voices will be heard.” MAM workers join a recent wave of art museum organizing campaigns across the country, including workers at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and, most recently, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where 89% of workers voted to unionize.

One hundred years ago today, after a seven-decade campaign, the 19th Amendment gave the vote to millions of women across the United States. And although achieving women’s suffrage in 1920 was a major victory, it was another 45 years before the Voting Rights Act of 1965 eliminated voting barriers for women of color.
That’s a lot of hard-fought, hard-won years of women making a difference through our voices and our votes. And nobody knows this better than union women, who vote at the voting booth and in our unions.
As we approach this historic 2020 election, mobilizing working women to vote is paramount to the goals of electing female candidates and candidates who advocate for women. Women are also critical to getting this country back on track in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and ending its disproportionate impact on women, especially women of color. We know that even as our vote is more crucial than ever, it is also more imperiled, with renewed voter suppression efforts and attacks on voting rights and our democracy.

Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1447 protested Thursday outside Transit Authority of River City (TARC) offices in Louisville, Kentucky, to call for hazard pay and stronger safety measures to protect members during the COVID-19 pandemic. Local 1447 President Theo Hamilton activated 75 bus drivers to participate at the rally, and the Kentucky AFL-CIO and other affiliated unions participated in solidarity. “This virus is like a bullet. It has no eyes. It’s catching everybody,” Hamilton told WDRB News. “A lot of my drivers are afraid—afraid to death—to come to work.” Five members of the local union have already been infected with the coronavirus.

The Strength and Solidarity of Our Membership: Worker Wins
Our latest roundup of worker wins begins with a series of wins in Maine and includes numerous examples of working people organizing, bargaining and mobilizing for a better life.
Bath Iron Works Win Spotlights Series of Victories in Maine: After a successful strike, workers at Bath Iron Works reached a tentative agreement that protects seniority and maintains current subcontracting levels, which will preserve quality jobs in Maine. IAM Local S6 President Chris Wiers said: “What we were able to accomplish at the negotiating table is a testament to the strength and solidarity of our membership. They were educated on the issues, and our negotiating committee knew they had the backing of our membership. I am incredibly proud of our entire team, and we’re excited to get back to work building the best ships in the world for the U.S. Navy.” Elsewhere in the state, Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 4 negotiated a new three-year contract with Eurovia Northeast Paving that gives members a 9% raise and creates new jobs. And members of the Waterville Professional Firefighters (IAFF Local 1608) ratified a new contract with significant improvements to members’ retirement plan.
Philadelphia Museum of Art Workers Win Historic Organizing Victory: After a yearlong campaign that had to overcome the pandemic shutdown and opposition from management, workers at the Philadelphia Museum of Art won a major victory, with 89% voting to form the Philadelphia Museum of Art Union (PMA Union). The new union, affiliated with AFSCME District Council 47, is now one of the largest unionized museum workforces in the United States and makes PMA the first major museum with wall-to-wall union coverage for employees.
Interactive Romance Game Workers Score Major Gains After Strike: After a 21-day strike conducted remotely, writers for the mobile game Lovestruck will see increased transparency at work and pay increases averaging 78%. While the writers are independent contractors and their right to strike isn’t protected under labor law, they took a brave stand and prevailed. The writers, all of whom are women, nonbinary and/or LGBTQ, sought help from the Campaign to Organize Digital Employees-CWA to launch Voltage Organized Workers. Management at Voltage Entertainment USA, which produces the game, rejected the workers’ demands and the strike began. The writers used social media to gather community support and raise funds for a workers support fund. Earlier this month, the company and its workers reached an agreement, and the first successful game worker strike in the history of the industry led to a significant victory.
Congressional Progressive Caucus Center Workers Join NPEU: Staff members at the Congressional Progressive Caucus Center (CPC Center) have voted to join the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU). They have requested voluntary recognition from management. In a statement, the union said: “We believe in unity and equity, and have dedicated our careers to serving and fighting for justice. We believe that unionizing will help uphold the CPC Center’s values and commitment to empowering and strengthening communities of all backgrounds across the nation. We are excited to join NPEU in solidifying our commitment to equity and justice in the workplace and beyond. We are thrilled management has signaled they will voluntarily recognize our union, and we look forward to reaching a formal agreement soon.”
Friends of the Earth Formally Recognizes New Employee Union: Management at environmental organization Friends of the Earth has voluntarily recognized Friends of the Earth Workers United (FOE Workers United) as the representative of their employees. FOE Workers United is affiliated as part of the NPEU. In a statement, the union said: “As Friends of the Earth staff, we are proud to be part of an organization with an outspoken mission of fighting for a more healthy and just world, and we believe this new union will strengthen that mission. Our membership is pleased to see Friends of the Earth live out its long-held values by recognizing our union. We are excited to work with management to strengthen our organization, both internally and externally.”
Hearst Workers Vote to Unionize: In a historic union win, the digital and print staff of Hearst Magazines overwhelmingly voted to unionize with the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE). The new bargaining unit will include 500 members from Hearst Magazines’ editorial, video, design, photo and social staff across 28 digital and print brands, including Cosmopolitan, Men’s Health and Elle. The vote comes after workers expressed their desire to unionize last November and management refused to voluntarily recognize the bargaining unit. Upon organizing, Hearst staff outlined a plan to collectively bargain a contract that addresses issues such as diversity, transparency, compensation and editorial standards.
SAG-AFTRA Members Approve New TV/Theatrical Contract: With nearly 75% of members voting to approve, SAG-AFTRA approved new three-year contracts for movies, television and new media. The contracts include wage increases, better funding for benefits, improved residuals for streaming, new protections covering nudity and sex scenes, and measures to prevent sexual harassment. SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris said: “I am grateful for the many members who got involved and used their voices to help set the priorities for this contract. This is a forward-thinking agreement that builds on the changing realities of the streaming business and positions our union to continue the fight for a safer workplace for all.” SAG-AFTRA also reached a tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on a new contract for animation.
Nurses Ratify First Contract in Arizona: In a historic move, registered nurses at St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s hospitals in Tucson, Arizona, voted overwhelmingly to approve their first contract with the National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United (NNOC/NNU), the first union contract ever for registered nurses in Arizona. “This contract is a culmination of all the collective actions and the union strength of our nurses. What we have achieved here will give nurses at St. Joseph’s and St. Mary’s a voice in patient care and working conditions moving forward,” said Christine Valenzuela, an intensive care unit RN at St. Mary’s Hospital. The three-year contract runs through May 31, 2023. Proud to vote yes on the first RN contract in the state, nurses say they also feel good about negotiating important patient care protections during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Virginia AFL-CIO Wins Emergency Temporary Standard to Prevent Workplace Infections: In a big victory for the labor movement, Virginia became the first state in the nation to enact an emergency temporary standard (ETS) for infectious diseases. The Virginia AFL-CIO, led by President Doris Crouse-Mays (CWA), took command of the statewide campaign to ensure the new coronavirus-related workplace safety standards were put in place. Earlier, Virginia’s Safety and Health Codes Board passed the ETS in a 9-2 vote. Crouse-Mays applauded the board’s action: “This is an important first step toward the protection of workers during this public health crisis, and we urge the members of the committee to continue to pass meaningful and positive standards that will promote job safety, protect workers and protect our community.”

When Chelsea Corcoran, a member of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) in Houston, Texas, fell severely ill with COVID-19, the staff at Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital did everything they could to save her life and the lives of the twins she was carrying. “I wasn’t able to provide enough oxygen for all three of us,” she said. Thanks to the extraordinary care she received from hospital staff, she and her babies survived and are on the road to recovery. Corcoran’s union brothers and sisters expressed their gratitude by delivering lunch to doctors and nurses at the hospital’s intensive care unit. The gesture was part of the union’s “feeding the front lines” campaign to thank health care workers on the front lines fighting the coronavirus.

Members of the Charleston Central Labor Council, the South Carolina AFL-CIO, the Greater Charleston chapter of the A. Philip Randolph Institute and their community allies teamed up last Thursday to provide food relief for some dozens of union families in the Charleston, South Carolina, area. Labor council President April Lott (AFGE) said, “Today, we were able to serve approximately 100 families with meat, milk, cheese, fruits and vegetables.” Last week’s food relief distribution was the third of six such events planned in Charleston, and it was staged at the Longshoremen (ILA) Local 1422 hall.

Service + Solidarity Spotlight: Washington State Labor Council Launches First-of-Its-Kind Naturalization Legal Aid Program
Working people across the United States have stepped up to help out our friends, neighbors and communities during these trying times. In our regular Service + Solidarity Spotlight series, we’ll showcase one of these stories every day. Here’s today’s story.
The Washington State Labor Council (WSLC) is launching a program to offer legal aid to permanent residents seeking naturalization. The program will prioritize union members, helping members obtain the resources and legal aid needed to become citizens. In places like Yakima, permanent residents in the state who work in agriculture often are denied access to the political process, preventing them from using their voices to effectively advocate for safety and better work conditions.
“What we’ve seen in Yakima County is that you have ranchers that have the capital power to do things like union-busting, or lobby and spend money on trying to create policies that are anti-labor,” said Dulce Gutiérrez (OPEIU), an organizer with WSLC. “With a largely immigrant workforce, it’s difficult, sometimes impossible, for working people to advocate for themselves and their families.”
The new program will help permanent residents navigate the process for naturalization and help them register to vote, so they have a voice in choosing the elected officials who make policies that directly affect their lives.

Driving rain and thunder couldn’t stop New Jersey’s working people from helping out Atlantic City families struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. The New Jersey State AFL-CIO, in connection with the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority and the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, distributed more than 2,000 food kits to laid-off union members and their families. Volunteers from the Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), the Operating Engineers (IUOE) and UNITE HERE helped Operation Feed Atlantic City go smoothly. The state federation plans to continue similar food distribution events as long as there is a need and President Charles Wowkanech (IUOE) attributes the success of the program to the generosity of the affiliates and members throughout the state.

Colorado Restaurant Workers United, a joint project of Denver DSA and UNITE HERE Local 23, rallied outside of U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner’s downtown Denver office in support of the extension of federal unemployment benefits. In addition to delivering the message “We Feed You, Don’t Let Us Starve,” the participating organizations bagged and distributed groceries to unemployed working families. Participating along with Restaurant Workers United were Local 23, the Colorado AFL-CIO, the Denver Area Labor Federation, Denver DSA, SEIU Local 105 and Colorado Jobs With Justice.
