Thanks for contact after father’s death

MY FATHER [the late William C. Calhoun, Local 74, Houston], in his early days, was very proud of being a part of boiler-making. He said it was a very hot job. My daddy was a special man. He had one leg eight inches shorter than the other due to a childhood accident. It did not stop him from doing anything. He wore an eight-inch cork shoe. Thank you [National Funds Office] so much for contacting me. I will not forget how great a union you are to contact me after five years of his death.

CARLA K. ZALTISIK
Proud daughter of Bill Calhoun

Letters to the Editor

Riveting is not a completely-lost art

I read the article in the Boilermaker Reporter about riveting [“Film captures story of Boilermakers,” p.3, Jan-Mar issue] and would like to let you know it’s not a completely-lost art. I’m a journeyman out of Local 85 [Toledo, Ohio]. My brothers, Tim [a former 10-year L-85 member], Terry [an active member who joined L-85 in 1992 with Todd], and I still drive rivets on Great Lakes’ freighters, as well as on high-pressure digesters in the Canadian paper mills.

SAJAC builds training center in Texas to meet job growth

SAJAC’s new training facility houses state-of-the-art equipment.

Facility honors IVP George D. Rogers, former L-132 BM-ST

“Build it and they will come.” That famous movie phrase could easily apply to the new training facility built by the Southeastern Area Joint Apprenticeship Committee (SAJAC) on land donated by Local 132 in LaMarque, Texas.

Since the center was completed in June 2006, the two classrooms and 22 welding booths have been in near-constant use, says Mark Thompson, business manager and secretary-treasurer of Local 132 since July 2002.

Boilermakers rehab boiler at A.S. King Plant

Workers on this night shift rigging crew are among 265 Boilermakers employed by B&W at the A.S. King Plant in Bayport, Minn.

B&W crews work 140,000 man-hours without injury

WORKING AT EXCEL Energy’s A.S. King Plant in Bayport, Minn., 265 Boilermakers are completing a Babcock & Wilcox boiler rehab project ― and they are compiling an impressive safety record in the process. B&W field supervisor Mike James reported that more than 140,000 man-hours have been worked “without so much as a scratch.” The job requires 10 cyclone change-outs. “These men truly deserve praise for their hard work and attention to detail,” James stated.
