Local lodge and CFL scholarship winners announced

THE BOILERMAKERS’ International Executive Council has announced its selection of scholarship recipients for three local lodges and the Canadian Federation of Labour (CFL).

The committee selected Jose Nathaniel Villanueva Espayos, son of Jose Espayos, Local 146 (Edmonton, Alberta) to receive a $1,000 CFL scholarship. He will also receive a $2,000 scholarship from the lodge.

International announces scholarship winners

Twenty-seven Boilermaker dependents earn awards totaling $54,000

THE BOILERMAKERS’ International Executive Council scholarship committee announced the winners of its 2013 scholarship program this past April. The committee awarded $54,000 to 27 recipients, with $42,000 being allocated to U.S. applicants and $12,000 to Canadian applicants.

Funds support pro-worker candidates, member education

TOP DONORS TO CAF and LEF in 2012 received recognition during the 45th annual Legislative Education Action (LEAP) conference in Washington, D.C., May 5-9. The awards went to vice-presidential sections, individual lodges, and individual members.

OSHA recordable rate drops below 2.0 for first time

THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION of Construction Boilermaker Employers (NACBE) presented its annual safety awards to the 2012 top-performing locals from the Boilermakers’ four U.S. vice-presidential sections March 4, during the Construction Sector Operations conference held at Marco Island, Fla.

Local 69 (Little Rock, Ark.), representing the Southeast section, took national honors with zero lost-time accidents, zero compensable injuries, and zero OSHA-recordable injuries. L-69 BM-ST Rodney Allison accepted the award.

Boilermakers from 15 lodges work together on major Syncrude job

THE SPRING 2012 Syncrude outage in Fort McMurray, Alberta, was significant for several reasons, according to L-146 (Edmonton) member Denis Lafleur. First, it was one of the largest outages in the Oil Sands region, involving work on Syncrude’s 37-1 plant that included two furnaces and a 256-ft. vacuum tower (one of the world’s largest). Second, the successful project brought together field construction Boilermakers from 15 locals on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border.

Donation helps needy families

THE PIKE COUNTY Children’s Christmas Fund, a charity long-supported by Local 105 (Piketon, Ohio), received a $500 donation from the lodge recently. In 2011, the fund served more than 1,000 children and over 400 families, providing food, clothing, and toys. In the photo to the right, retired L-105 member Rick Holland presents the gift to Tina Long, a Christmas Fund committee member, and Phyllis Amlin, Christmas Fund co-chair.

Jackson Stephens, 7, has L-105 connections

SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Jackson Stephens, the daughter of Local 105 (Piketon, Ohio) member Greg Stephens and granddaughter of L-105 BM-ST Van Stephens, rode away with the youth title in the Tennessee Walking Horse Association’s World Grand Championship held in Shelbyville, Ky., Aug. 30.

Donations build Brotherhood’s political strength

LODGES, VICE PRESIDENTIAL sections, and individual members that excelled in raising money for CAF and LEF in 2011 received special recognition during the LEAP conference in Washington, D.C., April 23-26.

CAF stands for Campaign Assistance Fund. As the Boilermakers’ political action fund, CAF money goes to support worker-friendly candidates for the U.S. House and Senate.
