The Republican Tax Plan Threatens Social Security

Charles W. Jones, International President Emeritus

Future Budget Surpluses Are Based on Taking Money from Social Security

Rob Peter to pay Paul. That's the Republican tax strategy. They want to win seats in this election, so they're offering tax cuts. They're saying that the federal budget surplus is so large everyone in America can get a reduction in their taxes.

It sounds great, but it's not exactly true. The money to pay for those tax cuts can only come from one source: Your Social Security fund.

The Kyoto Pact Is a Lot of Smoke

Charles W. Jones, International President Emeritus

It Will Weaken Our Economy But Not Reduce Pollution

This spring we got an unpleasant reminder of how easily air pollution crosses international boundaries. Forest fires in Mexico and Central America sent clouds of smoke northward, darkening skies all over the midwestern United States and Canada. In some cities, residents were warned not to go outdoors because of health risks from smoke inhalation.

We must stop the move to silence workers

Charles W. Jones, International President Emeritus

A nationwide campaign to take away our political voice threatens everything we have worked so hard to achieve

It opens doors. That's what Patrick Rooney, chairman of Golden Rule Insurance Company, told Mother Jones magazine when asked why he gave over $500,000 to the Republican National Committee in 1994. I'm sure Mr. Rooney knows exactly what he is talking about. He is also a major contributor (over $100,000) to Newt Gingrich's GOPAC, and other officers of Golden Rule have donated in excess of $600,000 to the Republican Party in the last five years.

Does All This Political Activity Really Make A Difference?

International President Emeritus Charles W. Jones

Yes, It Does - That's Why the GOP Is Trying to Silence Our Union's Political Voice

Do you sometimes get discouraged and wonder if all this political activity is worth the trouble? I hear members voice that opinion occasionally. Congress will do what it wants to do, they say. We have no power.

The New Year Offers Opportunities

Charles W. Jones, International President Emeritus

We Must Be Prepared to Take Advantage of Them

Looking forward into 1998, I am cautiously optimistic for all workers, but especially for unionized workers, and most especially for Boilermaker members. We won some gains in 1997, and the outlook for 1998 is promising.

Holidays Remind Us of What We've Gained Through Organized Effort

Charles W. Jones, International President Emeritus

Without unions, we wouldn't even have the ability to celebrate holidays with our families - unions earned workers paid holidays

The winter holidays are almost here, and most of us can expect to spend a little extra time with our families, to hear from those we haven't seen in a while, and perhaps to eat a little more than we should.

EPA's New Air Quality Standards Lack Scientific Basis

Charles W. Jones, International President Emeritus

Particle and ozone standards will damage the economy without significantly helping the environment

Nobody knows better than industrial construction workers how damaging airborne particles and chemicals can be to the human body. Hardly a Boilermaker working today hasn't lost a friend or family member to asbestosis, silicosis, or some other work-related lung disease. That's why Boilermakers and other union workers strongly supported the 1990 amendments to the Clean Air Act. We want clean air, for ourselves and for all future generations.
