Working Women Deserve Better Than Trump’s Sexism

Fri, 10/07/2016 - 10:49

At last week's presidential debate, America’s working women got a front-row seat to Donald Trump’s sexism. He repeatedly interrupted Hillary Clinton, a phenomenon too many working women can relate to, and repeated his claims that she doesn’t have the "presidential look" it takes to lead the United States. It seems like every day a new story from Trump’s past reveals more misogyny. Take the latest story out of his golf club in Palos Verdes, Calif., where Trump urged staff to fire unattractive hostesses and only hire "beautiful women."

Putting Off Retirement Shouldn’t Be a Death Sentence

Working people are working longer to support themselves and their families. And they are paying for it. Today, one in five workers are 65 years or older and are at greatest risk of fatalities and injuries due to falls, slips and trips. But a rule proposed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration would strengthen protections and prevent falls, slips and trips caused by workplace hazards.

Union Veterans Council Fires Back at Donald Trump for Saying Veterans with PTSD Are 'Weak'

Tue, 10/04/2016 - 10:15

Will Fischer, the executive director of the Union Veterans Council, AFL-CIO, had some strong words for Donald Trump after he said veterans with PTSD are "weak":

“Trump’s comments about veterans with PTSD reveal his total disdain for veterans and military families and highlight just how disconnected he is with our community. Calling combat veterans weak is mighty bold coming from someone who's kept awake at night over a mean tweet and who leveraged a minor injury and family privilege to dodge service during Vietnam.

That Awkward Moment When Donald Trump Shouts Out Union Members at His Rally and Hears Crickets

Mon, 10/03/2016 - 14:12

We're not surprised that working people in unions aren't so hot for Donald Trump. He supports a dangerous national "right to work" law, has never said he supports people's right to collectively bargain and even refuses to negotiate with his hotel staff who formed a union

Does Donald Trump Owe You Money?

Mon, 10/03/2016 - 11:50

Remember last week when you stopped by the coffee shop and bought a cheap, quick cup of your favorite caffeinated beverage? With a national average of about $2.70 for a 16-ounce cup and an 8.4% sales tax rate, you probably paid about 22 cents in taxes. If so, it's likely you paid more in taxes for that cup of coffee than Donald Trump paid in federal income taxes for the past 20 years.

National Voter Registration Day: Care About Your Community? Register to Vote!

Tue, 09/27/2016 - 06:00

My current work as a forensic coordinator for a hospital in Baltimore brings me into daily contact with people who are in the court system. Every day I run mental assessments to help the court decide whether mental illness is responsible for a person’s visit to the local courthouse. In my previous job at a local jail, I saw a steady stream of people returning to jail because they didn’t know how difficult having a criminal record would make it for them to find steady employment and readjust to life in their communities.
