OFFICIAL STATEMENT
Kansas City, Mo. (May 23, 2024) — Following is an official statement of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers:
The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers learned today that a former employee, Mr. Tyler Brown, has pled guilty in Kansas City, Kansas, Federal Court to violations of federal law concerning misuse of union funds.
According to the court proceedings, he assisted the former president, Newton Jones, in embezzling funds from the Union. The former president was removed from office by the union’s Executive Council in a decision that was approved by Judge Melgren of the United States District Court.
The union expects that there will be more convictions, and the union has taken remedial steps to ensure that the practices which the former president engaged in will not happen again. The union is cooperating fully with the government’s investigation of actions taken by the former officers.
The union has taken significant steps to examine past and current protocols of our union and its leadership—and to ensure we are on the right path forward in our practices.
There have been significant changes in leadership and internal and external procedures made by the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers over the last year to address issues raised by the conduct of former officers.
The union remains focused on our work serving the local lodges and members of our union to organize and better the working conditions of our members and their families.
