THE WALL STREET Journal reported Oct. 6 that Sen. John McCain plans to make major cuts to Medicare and Medicaid to pay for the health care tax credits he is proposing. The story, written by the Journal’s Laura Meckler, cited independent analysts who claim that $1.3 trillion might be slashed from the two programs. Meckler also noted that a senior McCain policy adviser has admitted that “the campaign has always planned to fund the tax credits, in part, with savings from Medicare and Medicaid.” The Alliance for Retired Americans issued a statement condemning McCain’s plan, calling it “the dirty little secret John McCain and his team of lobbyists didn’t want us to know about.”
