L-169’s Opalewski wins top graduate apprentice title

National award is first for an H2H contestant

CHRISTOPHER OPALEWSKI, a member of Local 169 (Detroit), became the first military veteran indentured through the Helmets to Hardhats program to be named the top U.S. Boilermaker graduate apprentice, following a four-day competition at L-169’s training center in Allen Park, Mich., Sept. 22-25. The 26th annual competition was held under the auspices of the Boilermakers National Apprenticeship Program (BNAP), with L-169 serving as the host lodge.

Boilermakers played key role in ultra-supercritical facility

EDISON ELECTRIC INSTITUTE (EEI), a leading utility trade group, has awarded American Electric Power (AEP) the 2013 Edison Award, the electric power industry’s most prestigious honor, for the company’s completion and commercial operation of the John W. Turk, Jr. Power Plant located in Hempstead County, Ark.

Starting operations on December 20, 2012, Turk is the first U.S. power plant to employ an advanced ultra-supercritical steam cycle.

OSHA recordable rate drops below 2.0 for first time

THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION of Construction Boilermaker Employers (NACBE) presented its annual safety awards to the 2012 top-performing locals from the Boilermakers’ four U.S. vice-presidential sections March 4, during the Construction Sector Operations conference held at Marco Island, Fla.

Local 69 (Little Rock, Ark.), representing the Southeast section, took national honors with zero lost-time accidents, zero compensable injuries, and zero OSHA-recordable injuries. L-69 BM-ST Rodney Allison accepted the award.

Eight contestants test at L-169

DEARBORN, MI, Sept. 24, 2012 – Eight graduate apprentices who placed first or second in their area apprenticeship competitions earlier this year began competing for national honors at Local 169 facilities yesterday.

Candidates took extensive written tests Sept. 23 and today began their practical tests, including reeving, ropes, and knots, arc gouging and safety, and tool identification and CPR.

Cutting-edge Turk Plant uses less coal and water, reduces emissions

THE FIRST-EVER commercially-deployed, ultra-supercritical power generation unit in the United States is under construction in southwest Arkansas — and Boilermakers are playing a leading role in the project.

The $2.1 billion, 600-MW J. W. Turk Jr. Plant will feature the latest environmental controls, according to majority owner Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO), an American Electric Power (AEP) operating company.

Title is first for Richmond, Va., lodge; L-69’s Tucker takes second place

GRADUATE APPRENTICE Jason Brown broke new ground for his lodge Sept. 27 – Oct. 1 by becoming the first L-45 (Richmond, Va.) member to win the Boilermakers’ national outstanding apprenticeship competition. Brown was also the first L-45 member ever to place in the Southeast area event — he was runner-up in that competition, held July 27-30 at L-199 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Boilermakers march for Free Choice in Little Rock

Apprentices and apprentice instructors from L-69 and other area lodges take part in a march in Little Rock, Ark., for the Employee Free Choice Act. Behind them is Little Rock High School, site of an infamous civil rights incident in 1957 in which the state’s governor kept black students from entering the then all-white school.

NEARLY TWO DOZEN members of Local 69 (Little Rock, Ark.) and other Boilermaker locals joined about 500 union members and supporters in a march on the Arkansas state capitol in July to urge support for the Employee Free Choice Act. The legislation would make it easier for workers to form unions, letting them decide whether or not to conduct secret ballot elections — instead of the employer making that decision.

THE NORTHEAST AND Great Lakes areas held their 23rd annual joint graduate apprentice competitions May 4-8 at Local 5 Zone 197 (Albany, N.Y.). The top two finishers in each contest will represent their areas in the national contest in Kansas City, Kan., Sept. 27-Oct. 1.
