Measure would create job opportunities for state building trades

THE BOILERMAKERS and other unions of the Building and Construction Trades Council of California (BCTCC) are applauding the passage of a bill to ensure that only highly-trained, highly-skilled tradesmen and tradeswomen may perform outside contractor work at the state’s petroleum refineries and other hazardous chemical plants.

SB 54 passed overwhelmingly: 51-24 in the state Assembly and 26-11 in the state Senate.

Funds support pro-worker candidates, member education

TOP DONORS TO CAF and LEF in 2012 received recognition during the 45th annual Legislative Education Action (LEAP) conference in Washington, D.C., May 5-9. The awards went to vice-presidential sections, individual lodges, and individual members.

Null judges 1st, 25th apprentice contests

SERVING AS A judge for the 25th annual Boilermaker National Apprenticeship Competition this year carried a special significance for Ken Null, a retired Local 549 (Pittsburg, Calif.) member and former Babcock & Wilcox project manager. Null, who resides in Redding, Calif., was one of the 12 judges who participated in the very first apprenticeship competition, held in Kansas City, Kan., in 1988.

Calif. labor council elects IVP Baca secretary-treasurer

Organization represents 350,000 skilled construction workers

DELEGATES TO THE State Building and Construction Trades Council of California, AFL-CIO, unanimously elected Boilermakers IVP J. Tom Baca to a four-year term as secretary-treasurer Oct. 20 during the council’s quadrennial convention in Santa Monica.

Baca joined the SBCTC Executive Board as the Boilermakers Northern California representative in 2005. He succeeds Jim Kellogg, who had served as SBCTC secretary-treasurer since 2008, and will work closely with newly-elected President Robbie Hunter.

Donations build Brotherhood’s political strength

LODGES, VICE PRESIDENTIAL sections, and individual members that excelled in raising money for CAF and LEF in 2011 received special recognition during the LEAP conference in Washington, D.C., April 23-26.

CAF stands for Campaign Assistance Fund. As the Boilermakers’ political action fund, CAF money goes to support worker-friendly candidates for the U.S. House and Senate.
