L-26 sponsors instruction at Georgia Power nuclear plant

WITH HUNDREDS OF Boilermakers working at nuclear power station Plant Vogtle in southeast Georgia — many of them living in temporary housing near the project and far from the nearest union hall — Local 26 (Savannah) BM-ST Johnathon Bates decided it only made sense to bring Boilermaker Code training onsite.

Over two successive weekends, April 14-15 and April 21-22, MOST Code trainers Steve Speed and Ray Parrot taught four day-long classes. MOST Representative Tony Smarra provided technical support.

Members receive Code training on Lackawanna job

MOST trainers conduct three classes in two days

NEARLY 150 MEMBERS working at the Lackawanna Energy Center near Scranton, Pennsylvania, completed Boilermaker Code training July 19-20. Prime contractor Kiewit hosted the training at the project site. Approximately 175 Boilermakers representing 30 locals from across the United States are on the job, building elements of a new 1,500 MW combined cycle gas plant. Local 13 (Philadelphia) has jurisdiction for the Boilermakers’ work.

BNAP training helps save a life

FORMER APPRENTICE CHAD Riley, son of Local 455 (Sheffield, Alabama) Jeff Riley, saved a boy’s life on Labor Day weekend with CPR skills he learned while in the Boilermaker National Apprenticeship Program.

Chad Riley and his family were spending part of Labor Day weekend at the Phil Campbell, Alabama, swimming area when Riley heard shouts coming from the water’s edge. A friend’s nephew wasn’t breathing after being found unconscious in the water. A bystander tried CPR on the boy for two minutes, but he still wasn’t breathing.

Apprenticeship areas plan 2015 contests

Local 456 will host national event

U.S. AREA APPRENTICESHIP committees have scheduled competitions for 2015. The events will be held as follows: Western States, May 4-7, at the Local 101 Training Center in Denver; Northeast/Great Lakes, June 1-4, at the Local 154 Training Center in Pittsburgh; and Southeast, June 28-July 2, at the Local 456 Training Center, Rock Hill, S.C.

The Boilermakers National Apprenticeship Competition will be held August 30-September 3 at the Local 456 Training Center.

Great Lakes Area Competition

Events determine finalists for national title

THE U.S. NATIONAL Apprenticeship Competition marks the highest level of skills and knowledge testing for Boilermaker graduate apprentices. But before the finale, contestants are selected at the local lodge level to compete in their geographic areas.

In 2013, 37 graduate apprentices reached their area competitions, from which eight were selected by judges to enter the nationals.

Boilermakers from 15 lodges work together on major Syncrude job

THE SPRING 2012 Syncrude outage in Fort McMurray, Alberta, was significant for several reasons, according to L-146 (Edmonton) member Denis Lafleur. First, it was one of the largest outages in the Oil Sands region, involving work on Syncrude’s 37-1 plant that included two furnaces and a 256-ft. vacuum tower (one of the world’s largest). Second, the successful project brought together field construction Boilermakers from 15 locals on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border.

International announces scholarship winners

Thirty-two Boilermaker dependents earn awards totaling $50,000

THE BOILERMAKERS’ International Executive Council scholarship committee announced the winners of its 2012 scholarship program this past April. The committee awarded $50,000 to 32 scholarship recipients, with $38,000 being allocated to U.S. applicants and $12,000 to applicants from Canada.
