Members receive Code training on Lackawanna job

MOST trainers conduct three classes in two days

NEARLY 150 MEMBERS working at the Lackawanna Energy Center near Scranton, Pennsylvania, completed Boilermaker Code training July 19-20. Prime contractor Kiewit hosted the training at the project site. Approximately 175 Boilermakers representing 30 locals from across the United States are on the job, building elements of a new 1,500 MW combined cycle gas plant. Local 13 (Philadelphia) has jurisdiction for the Boilermakers’ work.

Apprenticeship areas plan 2015 contests

Local 456 will host national event

U.S. AREA APPRENTICESHIP committees have scheduled competitions for 2015. The events will be held as follows: Western States, May 4-7, at the Local 101 Training Center in Denver; Northeast/Great Lakes, June 1-4, at the Local 154 Training Center in Pittsburgh; and Southeast, June 28-July 2, at the Local 456 Training Center, Rock Hill, S.C.

The Boilermakers National Apprenticeship Competition will be held August 30-September 3 at the Local 456 Training Center.

Runner-up spot goes to L-263’s Riley; Great Lakes Area takes team honors

ARTHUR KLING III, a member of Philadelphia Local 13 (Northeast Area), won top honors in the 2014 U.S. National Apprenticeship Competition held at the Mississippi River District Lodge 5/Local 37 training facility in Slidell, La., September 7-11. Kling scored best overall in a field of eight select candidates. The competition included a 10-hour-limit written exam and three days of practical exercises testing Boilermaker skills.

Events determine finalists for national title

THE U.S. NATIONAL Apprenticeship Competition marks the highest level of skills and knowledge testing for Boilermaker graduate apprentices. But before the finale, contestants are selected at the local lodge level to compete in their geographic areas.

In 2013, 37 graduate apprentices reached their area competitions, from which eight were selected by judges to enter the nationals.

Boilermakers from 15 lodges work together on major Syncrude job

THE SPRING 2012 Syncrude outage in Fort McMurray, Alberta, was significant for several reasons, according to L-146 (Edmonton) member Denis Lafleur. First, it was one of the largest outages in the Oil Sands region, involving work on Syncrude’s 37-1 plant that included two furnaces and a 256-ft. vacuum tower (one of the world’s largest). Second, the successful project brought together field construction Boilermakers from 15 locals on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border.

Donations build Brotherhood’s political strength

LODGES, VICE PRESIDENTIAL sections, and individual members that excelled in raising money for CAF and LEF in 2011 received special recognition during the LEAP conference in Washington, D.C., April 23-26.

CAF stands for Campaign Assistance Fund. As the Boilermakers’ political action fund, CAF money goes to support worker-friendly candidates for the U.S. House and Senate.

Injury rates drop across three categories

THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION of Construction Boilermaker Employers (NACBE) presented its annual safety awards to the 2011 top-performing locals from the Boilermakers’ four U.S. vice-presidential sections March 5 during the annual Construction Sector Operations conference held at Marco Island, Fla.

Local 263 (Memphis, Tenn.), representing the Southeast, took national honors with zero lost-time accidents, zero compensable injuries, and zero OSHA-recordable injuries.

MEMBERS FROM A dozen local lodges met in Kansas City, Mo., Jan. 15-20 to expand their skills under the MOST Project Management Training Program. MOST (Mobilization, Optimization, Stabilization, and Training) is a pioneering labor-management trust fund designed to address issues in the construction industry through innovative programs and collaboration.
