Boilermakers build relationships with legislators

DELEGATES TO THE 41st annual LEAP conference welcomed legislators, congressional aides, and other guests to the Boilermakers’ congressional reception March 18 to continue the work of building good relationships.

L-193 members stack it up in Alexandria

Local 193 members use a 365-ton crane to move a new ductwork section into place at the Mirant power plant on the Potomac River in Alexandria, Va. Sections ranged in size from 19,000 to 41,000 pounds.

Ductwork demo/install work on Mirant power plant stacks is on schedule

MEMBERS OF LOCAL 193 (Baltimore) have been on the job in Alexandria, Va., since August 2008, replacing old ductwork at the Mirant Potomac River Generating Station. The job is expected to be completed in February.

Working for Riggs Distler & Co. Inc., the Boilermaker crew is replacing everything from the ID fan to the stack tie-in on five units. In all they will remove 650,000 pounds of scrap metal and install 690,000 pounds of new steel, working a total of 190,000 man-hours.

Construction BMs train in Kansas City

New business managers from the U.S. and Canada attend training in Kansas City July 27-31.

NEARLY TWO DOZEN U.S. and Canadian business managers met in Kansas City, Mo., July 27-31 for new officer training. The event was hosted by Construction Division Services (CDS) in conjunction with the Education and Training Services Department.

“We had an excellent group that stayed focused the entire week on the curriculum we developed for new business managers,” said CDS Director Skipper Branscum. “Our goal was to introduce these leaders to the various programs and resources that are available to help them succeed.”

Orange, Texas, lodge works without injury in 2006

THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION of Construction Boilermaker Employers (NACBE) presented its annual safety awards to the 2006 top-performing locals from the Boilermakers’ five U.S. vice-presidential areas March 5 during the annual Construction Division conference at Marco Island, Fla.

Local 587 (Orange, Texas), representing the South and Central area, took national honors with zero lost-time accidents, zero compensable injuries, and zero OSHA-recordable injuries.
