Apprenticeship areas plan 2015 contests

Local 456 will host national event

U.S. AREA APPRENTICESHIP committees have scheduled competitions for 2015. The events will be held as follows: Western States, May 4-7, at the Local 101 Training Center in Denver; Northeast/Great Lakes, June 1-4, at the Local 154 Training Center in Pittsburgh; and Southeast, June 28-July 2, at the Local 456 Training Center, Rock Hill, S.C.

The Boilermakers National Apprenticeship Competition will be held August 30-September 3 at the Local 456 Training Center.

IEC scholarship committee announces local, CFL winners

THE BOILERMAKERS’ International Executive Council has announced its selection of scholarship recipients for three local lodges and the Canadian Federation of Labour (CFL).

The committee selected Victoria Wren Kuefler, daughter of Ken Kuefler, Local 146 (Edmonton, Alberta) to receive a $2,000 scholarship from the lodge. Victoria is a graduate of Holy Trinity Academy in Okotoks, Alberta. She is attending Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta, and plans to pursue a career in health care. (Attendance deferred for one year.)

L-13’s Kling wins 2014 graduate apprentice title

Runner-up spot goes to L-263’s Riley; Great Lakes Area takes team honors

ARTHUR KLING III, a member of Philadelphia Local 13 (Northeast Area), won top honors in the 2014 U.S. National Apprenticeship Competition held at the Mississippi River District Lodge 5/Local 37 training facility in Slidell, La., September 7-11. Kling scored best overall in a field of eight select candidates. The competition included a 10-hour-limit written exam and three days of practical exercises testing Boilermaker skills.

TOP DONORS TO CAF and LEF in 2013 received recognition during the 46th annual Legislative Education Action Program (LEAP) conference in Washington, D.C., April 28-May 1. The awards went to vice presidential sections, individual lodges and individual members.

Great Lakes Area Competition

Events determine finalists for national title

THE U.S. NATIONAL Apprenticeship Competition marks the highest level of skills and knowledge testing for Boilermaker graduate apprentices. But before the finale, contestants are selected at the local lodge level to compete in their geographic areas.

In 2013, 37 graduate apprentices reached their area competitions, from which eight were selected by judges to enter the nationals.


Local lodge and CFL scholarship winners announced

THE BOILERMAKERS’ International Executive Council has announced its selection of scholarship recipients for three local lodges and the Canadian Federation of Labour (CFL).

The committee selected Jose Nathaniel Villanueva Espayos, son of Jose Espayos, Local 146 (Edmonton, Alberta) to receive a $1,000 CFL scholarship. He will also receive a $2,000 scholarship from the lodge.

Lodges capitalize on power of social media

KEEPING MEMBERS AWARE of political developments affecting their jobs and unions has become much easier since social media tools became popular, say Boilermakers from several lodges.

Local 13 (Philadelphia) and Local 28, (Newark, N.J.) use Facebook specifically as a resource for political and legislative news and opinions, both at the state and federal levels. The lodges also share such information across their Facebook pages.

International announces scholarship winners

Thirty-two Boilermaker dependents earn awards totaling $50,000

THE BOILERMAKERS’ International Executive Council scholarship committee announced the winners of its 2012 scholarship program this past April. The committee awarded $50,000 to 32 scholarship recipients, with $38,000 being allocated to U.S. applicants and $12,000 to applicants from Canada.
