The Department of Education and Training Services provides or facilitates training for local lodge stewards. Local lodges interested in steward training should discuss training with the International representative who services their lodge.
When advisable, the Department of Education and Training Services coordinates with local lodges and International reps to schedule one- or two-day steward training seminars for one or more locals in a specific geographic area. These classes cover the basic skills and knowledge needed by stewards, including the steward’s responsibilities, how to interpret contract language, how to argue your position, “just-cause” for discipline, past practice grievances, Weingarten rights, keeping good records, when to file (and when not to file) unfair labor practice claims, sexual harassment grievances, and what to do when members are in conflict with each other.
Stewards (and members who want to become stewards) should consider attending the Boilermakers Collective Bargaining Institutes.
