Kansas City, Kan., April 6, 2016 — Boilermakers International President Newton B. Jones today condemned Nabisco and its parent company, Mondelez, for announcing recently that they will ship more than 600 American jobs from the Nabisco production facility in Chicago to Salinas, Mexico, calling the decision “symptomatic of bad trade deals and multinationals who place profit ahead of people.”
Jones pledged to stand with the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International (BCTGM), which represents workers at the Chicago facility, in boycotting Mexican-made Nabisco products. Reportedly, Oreos, which have been made in Chicago for 100 years, will now be made in Mexico and shipped back to Chicago, among other markets.
“The Boilermakers know too well the devastation to workers, their families and communities caused by shuttered manufacturing plants, as many of our members have suffered the same fate,” Jones said. “The ‘race to the bottom’ is not just a slogan, it’s a reality we are seeing around the world.
“Unions and union solidarity have never been more necessary in the face of such corporate greed and indifference to the fate of workers. It is time to hold these organizations accountable and to block further destructive trade deals like the Trans Pacific Partnership.”
