International announces scholarship winners for 2018

Twenty-eight graduating seniors receive combined $56,000

THE BOILERMAKERS’ INTERNATIONAL Executive Council scholarship committee has announced the winners of its 2018 scholarship program. The committee awarded $56,000 to 28 recipients, with $38,000 going to U.S. applicants and $18,000 going to Canadian applicants. The one-year grants included one $5,000 award, 11 $3,000 awards, two $2,000 awards and 14 $1,000 awards.

Young Local 73 member sets the bar with Red Seal certification

SHELDON PATTERSON IS already an over achiever. The 21-year-old from Local 73 (Halifax, Nova Scotia) became the first New Brunswick Teen Apprentice Program (NBTAP) graduate to earn a Red Seal Certification (a skills accreditation for construction industry workers). He’s also the youngest person in recent years to become a Red Seal Boilermaker.

SIXTEEN MEMBERS FROM across Canada completed a week-long course in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in early 2018 aimed at enhancing project management skills. Participants included general foremen with several years of supervisory experience, superintendents and project managers.

Trip raises awareness of veteran suicide rate

LEAVE IT TO a Boilermaker to help a stranger when he’s down. That’s what Kevin Michaud, Local 73 (Halifax, Nova Scotia) did when he saw Sean Richardson, cyclist and veteran advocate, pushing his bike along the highway in Edmundston, New Brunswick in August 2016.

IEC committee announces local, CFL winners

THE BOILERMAKERS’ International Executive Council has announced its selection of scholarship recipients for two local lodges and the Canadian Federation of Labour (CFL).

The committee selected Jason Boutilier, son of Daniel Boutilier, Lodge 73 (St. John, New Brunswick), and Dawn Elizabeth Curran, granddaughter of Edward Curran, Lodge 146 (Edmonton, Alberta), to each receive a $1,000 CFL scholarship award.

Lewis, Dubreuil win Canadian graduate apprentice contest

12 compete at BCIT in Vancouver, British Columbia

THE TEAM OF Brad Lewis and Jason Dubreuil won the 2014 Canadian Boilermaker Graduate Apprenticeship Competition held June 24-26 at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Vancouver.

Lewis, Local 146 (Edmonton, Alberta), and Dubreuil, Local 128 (Toronto, Ontario), were among 12 graduate apprentices from across Canada who participated in the biennial event, which is planned and executed by the Boilermakers National Training Trust Fund (NTTF), Canada.
