L-29 member hikes 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail

Holland and Miss Kay take a break along the trail.

Adventure takes more than five months

IF YOU EVER plan to hike the 2,186-mile Appalachian Trail, Dola Holland has some advice. Pack light. Bring rain gear. Plan on cold weather, even in the South.

Holland, a member of Local 29 (Boston) and his 4-year-old black lab, Miss Kay, made the five-and-a-half-month trek in 2013, starting in Maine on June 11 and ending in Georgia on November 23. It was a trip that had captured his imagination for some time, especially as the trail meanders close to his home near Plymouth, Vermont.

Thanks to “slices”

AFTER 30 PLUS years of being a part of this great and crazy Boilermaker life, I want to thank all those “slices” who helped, taught, looked out for and just plain put up with me that made up my Boilermaker “pie.”

I also want to thank the Boilermaker ladies in my hall and in the Funds Office for being so nice.

Your Brother,

Area competitions test graduate apprentices

Great Lakes Area Competition

Events determine finalists for national title

THE U.S. NATIONAL Apprenticeship Competition marks the highest level of skills and knowledge testing for Boilermaker graduate apprentices. But before the finale, contestants are selected at the local lodge level to compete in their geographic areas.

In 2013, 37 graduate apprentices reached their area competitions, from which eight were selected by judges to enter the nationals.

Safety record not the first

I WOULD LIKE to correct your kudos article in the Jan-Mar issue of the Reporter, titled “Kiewit praises Local 29 [Boston] safety performance.” The article stated that a project at the Brayton Point power plant involving Kiewit and Local 29 marked the first time the OSHA VPP (Voluntary Protection Program) Star Award has been given in New England. However, Black & Veatch Construction Inc. and Local 29 received an OSHA VPP STAR Safety Award in 1999 for a project at the Berkshire power plant.
