L-154’s John Heine-Parisi shows some of the medals he has won over his 40-year skydiving career.

L-154 member is professional skydiver

JOHN HEINE-PARISI says he has never fallen down during his 36 years working as a field construction Boilermaker. But when it comes to his second job, as a professional skydiver, well, that’s a different story. In fact, the L-154 member left his feet for the 10,000th time on Aug. 2, 2011, sailing earthward at 120 miles an hour before touching down to a controlled landing.

Leaders from four states attend

A COAL SUMMIT hosted by Local 154 (Pittsburgh) Aug. 17 drew about 200 leaders from organized labor, business, environmental groups, and government, as well as rank-and-file union members. The event was planned by the L-154 Clean Coal Committee to bring together parties who have a shared interest in the future of coal.

Star of “Only in America” tests boilermaker skills

BOILERMAKERS WORKING an outage at the Bruce Mansfield power plant near Pittsburgh got a rare opportunity September 19 to share their jobsite with America’s top blue-collar comedian, Larry the Cable Guy.

Larry arrived at the power plant with his film crew to shoot an episode of “Only in America,” a series that, according to the show’s website, explores “the things that make this country great.” Pittsburgh Local 154 BM Ray Ventrone coordinated the event with plant owner First Energy and outage contractor Enerfab.

International announces scholarship winners

Thirty-two Boilermaker dependents earn awards totaling $50,000

THE BOILERMAKERS’ International Executive Council scholarship committee announced the winners of its 2012 scholarship program this past April. The committee awarded $50,000 to 32 scholarship recipients, with $38,000 being allocated to U.S. applicants and $12,000 to applicants from Canada.

Donations build Brotherhood’s political strength

LODGES, VICE PRESIDENTIAL sections, and individual members that excelled in raising money for CAF and LEF in 2011 received special recognition during the LEAP conference in Washington, D.C., April 23-26.

CAF stands for Campaign Assistance Fund. As the Boilermakers’ political action fund, CAF money goes to support worker-friendly candidates for the U.S. House and Senate.

Twenty attend MOST training session

MEMBERS FROM A dozen local lodges met in Kansas City, Mo., Jan. 15-20 to expand their skills under the MOST Project Management Training Program. MOST (Mobilization, Optimization, Stabilization, and Training) is a pioneering labor-management trust fund designed to address issues in the construction industry through innovative programs and collaboration.

L-85’s Harman places second; NE contestants take team honors

EIGHT TOP BOILERMAKER graduate apprentices from across the United States tested their skills during the 24th annual National Outstanding Apprentice Competition held at the Local 7 (Buffalo, N.Y.) training facilities in Orchard Park Sept. 25-29. Contestants competed in written and practical tests. They were graded individually and as teams from their respective geographic areas. Judges included veteran Boilermakers and contractor representatives.
