Members receive Code training on Lackawanna job

MOST trainers conduct three classes in two days

NEARLY 150 MEMBERS working at the Lackawanna Energy Center near Scranton, Pennsylvania, completed Boilermaker Code training July 19-20. Prime contractor Kiewit hosted the training at the project site. Approximately 175 Boilermakers representing 30 locals from across the United States are on the job, building elements of a new 1,500 MW combined cycle gas plant. Local 13 (Philadelphia) has jurisdiction for the Boilermakers’ work.

Area competitions test graduate apprentices

Great Lakes Area Competition

Events determine finalists for national title

THE U.S. NATIONAL Apprenticeship Competition marks the highest level of skills and knowledge testing for Boilermaker graduate apprentices. But before the finale, contestants are selected at the local lodge level to compete in their geographic areas.

In 2013, 37 graduate apprentices reached their area competitions, from which eight were selected by judges to enter the nationals.

Effective Jan. 1, 2007 to Dec. 31, 2008, for members of Local 5, New York, who manufacture building products at Quickway Metal Fabricators Inc., and effective Oct. 14, 2006 to Oct. 14, 2009, for six Local 5 members who work at Steel Style Inc.

SAJAC builds training center in Texas to meet job growth

SAJAC’s new training facility houses state-of-the-art equipment.

Facility honors IVP George D. Rogers, former L-132 BM-ST

“Build it and they will come.” That famous movie phrase could easily apply to the new training facility built by the Southeastern Area Joint Apprenticeship Committee (SAJAC) on land donated by Local 132 in LaMarque, Texas.

Since the center was completed in June 2006, the two classrooms and 22 welding booths have been in near-constant use, says Mark Thompson, business manager and secretary-treasurer of Local 132 since July 2002.

Boilermakers rehab boiler at A.S. King Plant

Workers on this night shift rigging crew are among 265 Boilermakers employed by B&W at the A.S. King Plant in Bayport, Minn.

B&W crews work 140,000 man-hours without injury

WORKING AT EXCEL Energy’s A.S. King Plant in Bayport, Minn., 265 Boilermakers are completing a Babcock & Wilcox boiler rehab project ― and they are compiling an impressive safety record in the process. B&W field supervisor Mike James reported that more than 140,000 man-hours have been worked “without so much as a scratch.” The job requires 10 cyclone change-outs. “These men truly deserve praise for their hard work and attention to detail,” James stated.
