Jamie McMillan: ‘Evangelist’ for the skilled trades

Local 128’s Jamie McMillan

WHEN JAMIE MCMILLAN interacts with high school students, it’s hard to tell if she’s a student or the teacher. She acts young, has boundless energy and fits in with students—which is a bit ironic, considering she dropped out of high school her senior year. But after getting her GED, and becoming a journeyman with the Ironworkers (she’s currently a Boilermaker apprentice), she now works the tools six months of the year. She spends the rest of the year speaking to school-age kids through her business KickAss Careers—a name students picked.

Lodge 128 takes on massive tower removal

Boilermakers rigged part of a 166-foot tower that suffered a structural failure in Sarnia, Ontario. Members of L-128, L-555 and L-73 removed the tower safely.

LOCAL 128 (TORONTO) STEPPED it up when a 166-foot tall, 16-foot diameter naphtha stripper tower experienced a structural failure at the Imperial Oil Limited plant in Sarnia, Ontario. In April, during one of the largest shutdowns at the area’s refineries, the tower failed approximately 60 feet up and fell directly onto the fin fans at that same height.

While no one was hurt, it was a very precarious and potentially dangerous situation that had to be remedied immediately.

Boilermakers raise $35,000 for project as other unions, community support effort

IN 2016, JAMIE Stewart's house in Corunna, Ontario, was falling apart all around him. The foundation was sinking. The roof was falling in. Black mold threatened his health. It was a trying time for Stewart, a Local 28 (Toronto, Canada) apprentice who suffered a devastating swimming accident more than 20 year ago. That accident left him a quadriplegic.
