History
The National Transient Division of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers located in Hendersonville, Tennessee, was created in 1939 as Lodge 500. This occurred after significant confrontation between local lodge members and tankees employed by CBI which came to a head in St. Louis, MO. Some original signers of the Tank Agreement were CBI, PDM, Hammond Iron, Caldwell, and Graver.
In 1946 Lodge 500 was discontinued as such with the formation of the National Transient Members (NTM) Unit. At the 25th Consolidated Convention in 1977, the NTM Unit officially became the National Transient Division (NTD) Unit. The National Transient Lodge (NTL) was formed in 1985 replacing the NTD Unit and remained in place until 2008 when the NTL was consolidated into U.S. Construction Lodges.
Services Provided
The National Transient Division provides information and services to local lodges, International Representatives, and signatory employers. Services include contract negotiations, contract administration, grievance processing, grievance arbitration, assistance to local lodges processing membership required under NTD collective bargaining agreements, membership job search (although members solicit their own work), and providing MOST safety training.
Industries and Products
Boilermaker members work under collective bargaining agreements in industries that manufacture tanks, water towers, spheres, hydrocrackers, metal swimming pools, heaters, stacks, nuclear containments, and any work requiring steel plate fabrication that jurisdictionally belongs to the Boilermakers.
