Reminder: Virginians can vote absentee in primaries until June 6

IBB urges Boilermakers to support McAuliffe for governor

VIRGINIA RESIDENTS HAVE until Saturday, June 6, if they wish to vote absentee in the primary elections in their state. One key race the Boilermakers are watching closely is the contest for governor, says Boilermakers Director of Public Affairs Bridget Martin. The IBB has endorsed Terry McAuliffe, a strong supporter of organized labor.

Martin said that if you are unable to go the polls in Virginia June 9, absentee voting is something to consider. If you meet eligibility requirements to vote absentee, you can vote in person now through June 6 — or you can send in an absentee ballot by mail through June 2nd. Absentee voting may be allowed if you will be out of the area for business, vacation, school, commuting, or for other legitimate reasons. You can learn more about voting absentee at www.sbe.virginia.gov/cms/Absentee_Voting/Index.html.

McAuliffe has spent four decades starting businesses and fighting to create jobs, improve health care and education, and build a better future for working families, said Martin.

On March 31, International President Newton B. Jones issued a statement supporting McAuliffe. He stated: “Terry has spent years fighting for working families. Like millions of other Americans, Boilermakers are nervous about the economy and about their future, and their children’s future. There is uncertainty and concern, but also hope. We believe our best days are ahead of us, and Terry is the best answer to Virginia’s need for a leader who can take on some very tough challenges and build a stronger economy.”

A businessman and political consultant, McAuliffe served as the head of the Democratic National Committee from 2001 to 2005, and chaired Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign in 2008.

In response to the Boilermakers’ endorsement, McAuliffe stated: “I am counting on Virginia’s workers to be my number one partner in the governor’s office. Hardworking men and women like those from the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers who build ships, repair our naval vessels, maintain our energy infrastructure, and make Virginia a safer place for all residents…are an incredible asset to the Commonwealth, and I will be honored to work with them as governor.”

How you vote is a personal decision. The Boilermakers have carefully researched the candidates for Virginia governor and believe that Terry McAuliffe is the best choice for working families. If you are eligible to vote absentee, please do so in person by June 6 or via mail by June 2.
