Williams, Stewart appointed to new M.O.R.E. Work Investment Fund roles

IR Erica Stewart, a member of L-693, has been appointed as National Coordinator of Women in the Trades Initiatives for the M.O.R.E. Work Investment Fund.

BM-ST OF LOCAL 13 (Philadelphia) Martin Williams and IR Erica Stewart have both been appointed to new roles that will further catalyze the M.O.R.E. Work Investment Fund on the state and national levels. Williams has been appointed to serve as the National Coordinator of State Legislative Affairs for the M.O.R.E. Work Investment Fund, and Stewart has been appointed to serve as the National Coordinator of Women in the Trades Initiatives for the M.O.R.E. Work Investment Fund.


Washington State Governor signs bill requiring refinery workers be apprenticeship graduates

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee signed ESHB 1817 into law on May 8, 2019. Attending the signing were State Rep. Mike Sells, primary sponsor of the bill and chair of the Committee on Labor and Workplace Standards. Also attending were state senators Rebecca Saldaña, Jesse Salomon and Steve Conway; Washington State AFL-CIO President Larry Brown; WBCTD Legislative Director Neil Hartman; WBCTD Executive Secretary Mark Riker and Luke Esser, government affairs. KANSAS CITY, Kan., May 9, 2019 — The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers and Washington State Building Trades scored a win yesterday when Governor Jay Inslee signed ESHB 1817, requiring outside contractors and subcontractors in Washington State refineries and chemical plants to employ journey-level workers who have graduated from state-approved apprenticeship programs.

Citing a “skilled and trained workforce” as necessary to perform onsite work, the new law also requires workers to complete advanced safety training and to be paid accordingly.

Measure benefitting Boilermaker work passes Washington State House & Senate

Western States M.O.R.E. Work Investment Fund Organizers Mircha Vorobets, Erik Seaberg and Trent Sorensen with IR Mark Keffeler, BM-ST Tracey Eixenberger and members of L-502 in front of the Washington State Capital successfully lobbied to get HB 1817 passed. The measure awaits Washington State Governor Jay Inslee to sign it into law.

Important news out of Washington State for Boilermakers: Proposed legislation has passed both the State House and Senate that requires 60 percent of craftsmen and women working in Washington State refineries to be apprentices of state approved programs—including the Boilermakers apprenticeship program.

The measure, which was powered by Boilermakers Western States M.O.R.E. Work Investment Funds through a joint effort with the Washington State Building Trades, now awaits the signature of Washington State Governor Jay Inslee.

IN AN HISTORIC event in Salt Lake City May 7, International officers, International reps and business managers from the Western States’ eight construction locals launched the first-ever M.O.R.E. Work Action Council meeting.

M.O.R.E. (Marketing, Organizing, Recruitment and Employment) is a work investment fund financed by U.S. construction members and designed to transform the union using proactive, coordinated strategies to increase work opportunities and bring in new members.
