U.S. House fends off Davis-Bacon attack

Amendment fails 233-189

THE U.S. HOUSE of Representatives defeated a budget bill amendment Feb. 19 that would have suspended the Davis-Bacon Act through the remainder of fiscal year 2011, which ends Sep. 30. Introduced by Rep. Steve King of Iowa, the amendment lost by a 233-189 vote.

Obama takes Wisconsin governor to task for ‘assault on unions’

President challenges attack on collective bargaining rights

IN AN INTERVIEW with station WTMJ in Milwaukee Feb. 16, President Obama came to the defense of government union workers over a state budget proposed by Republican Governor Scott Walker that would strip away their collective bargaining rights. Walker’s “budget repair bill” has sparked major protests at the state capitol.

DGA announces 2011 LEAP issues

WHEN DELEGATES TO the 43rd annual Legislative Education Action Program (LEAP) conference gather in Washington, D.C., March 21, they will encounter a much different political picture than existed last year.

The November 2010 mid-term elections produced an historic number of new members of Congress. Delegates will need to introduce our union to the staffs of these new representatives and senators, and outline our priorities on the issues impacting the Brotherhood’s diverse membership.

‘Right to work’ advocates should consider business expert’s rude awakening

WITH THE GOP gaining strength in many state legislatures following the 2010 midterm elections, Republicans in some states are once again pushing for so-called “right to work” laws. Unions have had some success in fending off this anti-worker legislation in past decades, although 22 states – primarily in the South and West – have RTW laws today.

L-199 volunteers work to help pass constitutional amendments curtailing gerrymandering in Florida.

Constitutional changes will limit gerrymandering

A NON-PARTISAN group seeking to reform Florida’s redistricting laws has cited Local Lodge 199 (Jacksonville, Fla.) as one of the key players in its successful ballot initiative last November. The initiative, backed by Fair Districts Florida, included two constitutional amendments aimed at discouraging the practice of gerrymandering. It passed by more than 60 percent of the vote.

Labor Department sets 2011 priorities

Workplace safety receives heavy emphasis

THE DEPARTMENT OF Labor published its Fall 2010 Regulatory Agenda in the Federal Register Dec. 20, 2010, outlining its priorities for 2011. The DOL plans to propose, draft, or make final more than 70 rules affecting employment, many of which target health and safety concerns.

What repealing health care reform would cost

HOUSE SPEAKER John Boehner (R-OH-8th) has promised to bring his bill to repeal health care reform up for a vote this Wednesday, January 12. His proposal is pure theater, of course. Regardless of what happens in the House, a companion bill will never get past the Senate. President Obama will not even need his veto to stop this one.

Despite midterm successes, GOP faces hurdles

Unions brace for anti-labor shift in Congress, states

FRESH FROM THEIR historic victories in the U.S. House, as well as gains in the U.S. Senate and state offices, the GOP appears determined to pursue an anti-worker, anti-labor agenda. Their “to-do list” is extensive: repeal health care reform, kill pro-labor legislation, slash government jobs, dismantle business regulations, pass more free trade laws, and place a Republican in the White House in 2012, among other objectives.
